Q

I only know of your name because of Journey, have you been involved in other games? Other media entirely?

Austin Wintory responded on 03/25/2012
A

Yes I also wrote the music for thatgamecompany's first major game called flOw (I did the original flash version which was Jenova Chen's USC Master's Thesis, and then I did the PS3 version too). I am also currently finishing a game called Monaco for Pocket Watch Games, due out later this year.

I've also done about 35 feature films. You can see the list on my website, many of which are available on DVD (www.austinwintory.com).

And I also write concert music for orchestras, chamber ensembles, solo recitals etc. And when there's extra time, I often do little weird musical experiments for fun. As an example you can hear my single "Khor" by searching "Austin Wintory Khor" on Youtube ...

Hows Life?

Life is wonderful!!!

Q

I'm listening to the cover of the Journey theme performed by the Ocarinadiva. How did you decide to use ocarina for your soundtrack? It seems so perfect, very haunting and melancholy.

Austin Wintory responded on 03/17/2012
A

The cover that Cris (the Ocarina Diva) did was entirely her own doing. She emailed me to ask permission and I was, of course, very flattered and said go for it!! But that piece is not anywhere in the game or on the soundtrack.

However it just MIGHT be in the free bundle I'll be sending out soon ... :)

Q

What's your favorite instrument to write for ?

Austin Wintory responded on 03/17/2012
A

Honestly I don't have an answer to that. There are 6 basic families: strings, brass, winds, percussion, voices and electronics. I truly love them all and in all combinations. Ultimately I'm most inspired by great performers, but it doesn't matter to me what they play.

Q

LLLLLLOOOOOVE the music!!! How did you create those beautiful textures? Did you mix it yourself or it was mixed somewhere else?

Austin Wintory responded on 03/17/2012
A

Thank you!!!!! I created all the textures as part of the compositional process, and in each case it was done a little differently. Sometimes it was done 100% electronically, or other times I would manipulate recordings (either of myself, or other musicians).

The initial mixing was all done by me, and for the final score it was mixed by Sony's staff mixers in Foster City (outside of San Francisco). They did a wonderful job bringing it to the finish line!

Q

So i just recently watched Cris Gale's cover of the ending credits and loved it. Will you be releasing the backtrack she used as well?

Austin Wintory responded on 03/16/2012
A

She did a wonderful job!!! If you (or anyone else) is interested in any cover versions or re-arrangements that would require use of the original tracks, please just email me via my website.

I'm totally happy to support any of this sort of thing, but for anything using the original recordings I want to be sure and see what your plan is to make sure it's something that won't get us into trouble with Sony. :)

Q

When should we expect to get the musical bundle?

Austin Wintory responded on 03/14/2012
A

I am planning to release the music bundle within the next couple weeks. It'll come out before the soundtrack, which I don't have a release date yet for either, but it'll be after that for sure. I promise to send out an email letting you know!
