Q

Will you be performing anytime soon in the San Francisco bay area? Your work is amazing... :)

Austin Wintory responded on 11/10/2012
A

I certainly hope so!! Check back here, and especially via Twitter and Facebook and I'll always make sure to post with lots of warning about performances.

Q

Love your music, Austin!

I'll make use of your generous offer on Bandcamp, thanks.
Any chance of putting more music up there (Journey, Banner Saga, etc.)? Please say yes and don't send me to iTunes!

Austin Wintory responded on 11/10/2012
A

Thank you so much!! Banner Saga and Monaco will DEFINITELY be on BandCamp. Journey unfortunately won't be because it's under the control/ownership of Sony, and their deal with iTunes prevents it. Of course, physical CD's are available from thatgamecompany so that sidesteps iTunes! :)

Q

Will you be incorporating your music in any future planned games by ThatGameCompany?

Austin Wintory responded on 11/10/2012
A

I certainly hope so!!

Q

Do you have the sheet music for the song Gratitude? I was planning on doing an ensemble with the song

Austin Wintory responded on 11/10/2012
A

Please email me directly at cmusic@austinwintory.com! I am delighted to facilitate sheet music for performances of anything of mine. I don't necessarily have scores/parts for everything but we can always see about making it work! Thank you!!

Q

You do interactive music, right? Or dynamic, I haven't got my terminology right yet. I'd love to work with an artist that did that! I'm already on TIGSource, but is there a dynamic music go-to place?

Austin Wintory responded on 10/08/2012
A

Yes I definitely do interactive (or dynamic) music! Journey (and all my other videogame scores) are interactive to the user's experience. What sort of collaboration are you looking for? Feel free to email me via my website if you're looking to work on something together.

And regarding a go-to place? I'd have to learn more what you're after before I suggest somewhere to look. Email me :)

Q

Do you have any sheet music available for cello for the Nascence piece.

Austin Wintory responded on 10/08/2012
A

No but I hope to have a slew of sheet music available soon!!!

Q

As an artist, I often use music to help inspire me. So as a composer, what do you use to help inspire you? This is something I have always wondered about composers. :)

Austin Wintory responded on 10/08/2012
A

Composers in general get inspiration from all sorts of places. My NUMBER ONE source of inspiration are the works by my cousin Sonja Eisenberg: http://www.sonjaeisenberg.net

I would say that my music is constantly searching for ways to be as equivalent as possible to her paintings and poetry.

Obviously other music is going to inevitably be a big one too! In that department, for me the composers I most look up to Jerry Goldsmith, Bela Bartok, Benjamin Britten, and Stravinsky. The list quickly fans out from there but other cherished composers would be Brahms, Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, and Samuel Barber. Among the living I'd put John Corigliano, Aaron Jay Kernis and Elliot Goldenthal at the top of the list.

And course there are many other wonderful contemporary musical characters. People like Jon Brion (in particular when working with FIona Apple) and Bjork are particular favorites ...

Q

Just wanted to say that your work on Journey is amazing, and I especially love the song "I was born for this". Was there a particular reason for choosing Lisbeth Scott? Thanks for the great experience!

Austin Wintory responded on 07/07/2012
A

Thank you so so much! I am thrilled you enjoyed it. As for Lisbeth, she is a very special singer and one with whom I've had the great joy of working several times. You can hear our previous collaboration on the end title piece "In the Fog" from the film CAPTAIN ABU RAED. When it came time to write a song for JOURNEY, she was the one voice I could imagine doing it. :)

Q

Hey Austin I know this request probably can't happen but is it possible for those that didn't back 150 dollars to the Banner Saga to still get a signed physical CD? Otherwise it'll be eBay for me.

Austin Wintory responded on 07/07/2012
A

Nothing is impossible!! :) Let me finish actually composing Banner Saga first and cross that bridge when we come to it. Keep in touch (Twitter, facebook, etc) and we'll see what we can do when the music is actually finished.
